| Is the Mortgage Burning Party a Thing of the Past? Posted: 21 Apr 2010 08:45 PM PDT A good example which demonstrates the potential danger of this situation is the third world sovereign debt crisis. Granted, it isn't houses, but the principle is the same. Because many of these third world countries will never be able to pay the debts owed to the World Bank and the IMF, those entities face default on hundreds of millions of dollars in debt. The IMF tried to restructure things, but at the last moment, someone sold the bonds which were about to be forgiven to vulture capitalists at mere pennies on the dollar. Then these vultures showed up at the world court waving the papers demanding full payment. The sovereign nations had no choice but to negotiate and pay off the vultures with aid money from first world countries. | ||
| First Europe, then the US – now abuse claims sweep Latin America Posted: 21 Apr 2010 08:42 PM PDT The paedophile priest scandal currently enveloping the Vatican has spread to one of the most Catholic areas of the world following a string of new abuse revelations throughout Latin America. Reports of priests raping or abusing minors have now emerged in Brazil, Bolivia, Uruguay, Mexico and Chile causing growing anger in a continent that is home to nearly half the world's Catholics. | ||
| 300 abuse cases, one defrocking Posted: 21 Apr 2010 08:42 PM PDT VICTORIA Police has called for sweeping changes to the way Melbourne's Catholic Church deals with sex crime allegations, as The Age reveals that only one priest has been defrocked for abuse in the past 14 years. | ||
| 'Evil': A harrowing look at a pedophile priest Posted: 21 Apr 2010 08:41 PM PDT O'Grady admits he abused dozens of boys and girls during the 1970s and '80s, including a 9-month-old. When accusations surfaced, church officials simply moved O'Grady to another parish. The documentary charges that the church ignored reports against O'Grady and lied to law enforcement officers and parishioners to avoid liability and escape scrutiny. | ||
| Bishops are branded 'narcissistic sociopaths' Posted: 21 Apr 2010 08:40 PM PDT A priest who suffered sexual abuse has branded bishops and priests who fail to reach out to abuse victims as "narcissistic sociopaths". Father Patrick McCafferty has launched a blistering attack on the institutional church, claiming it was inflicted with a deep sickness "from the top down". |
